MINI Cooper Electric Convertible Project Cancelled, Originally Scheduled for 2027 Production

According to industry sources cited by BMW Blog, the production plan for the electric MINI Cooper Convertible (J03) has been cancelled. The convertible electric vehicle was expected to be produced alongside the J01 Cooper hardtop electric version at the Oxford factory in the UK by 2027, with some production also taking place in China.

The decision to cancel J03 may have been driven by a combination of factors, including changes in the electric vehicle market environment and pressures on profitability for entry-level electric models like the Cooper. The rise of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers has significantly impacted the market, forcing traditional premium car manufacturers to quickly adapt to market changes. Now, some Chinese car companies are able to offer advanced electric vehicles at more affordable prices, posing a considerable challenge to traditional car manufacturers.

Despite the shelving of the J03 plan, MINI will still offer convertible options for loyal consumers. The recently released F67 gasoline-powered convertible will be available in the US and is expected to continue to be the top choice for consumers who want to experience the driving pleasure of MINI convertibles.

J03 was originally planned to share the same powertrain as J01 Cooper. The current 2024 MINI Cooper E is equipped with a 184-horsepower, 290 Nm electric motor. The higher-performance Cooper SE offers 218 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. The Cooper E comes with a 40.7 kWh battery, providing a range of 190 miles (approximately 305.78 kilometers, WLTP). The Cooper SE is upgraded to a 54.2 kWh battery, increasing the range to 250 miles (approximately 402.34 kilometers, WLTP).

The F67 convertible will continue to carry on MINI's convertible driving experience, bringing drivers a thrilling wind-racing experience. Meanwhile, MINI's electrification strategy relies on models such as J01 Cooper, Aceman, and the German-made Countryman SE.
